# Internet access in Carson City, NV, by the numbers

Carson City is both a city and a county, so one set of Census figures covers both: 23,692 households, 77.8 percent on a cable, fiber or DSL subscription, 11.0 percent on a phone data plan only, 6.0 percent on satellite and 5.8 percent with none (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002). The table adds four ZIP rows.

Most of the other tables here have a county row and a separate row for each town. Carson City has a single row doing both jobs, so the county and the place show identical numbers. The detail is in the ZIPs, where one or two stand out.

## Highlights

- Phone-only: 11.0 percent of households, close to Nevada's 11.8 percent (ACS 2020-2024, B28002).
- No subscription: 5.8 percent, 1,364 households; ZIP 89706 reports 8.0 percent, 675 households.
- Work from home: 9.8 percent of workers, with a mean commute of 20.5 minutes, the shortest of the six counties.
- Businesses: 1,962 establishments with 22,826 employees (County Business Patterns 2023).

## The data

How Carson City gets online

- Any internet subscription 92.2%
- Cable, fiber, DSL (or fixed wireless) 77.8%
- Satellite 6%
- Phone data plan only 11%
- No internet at home 5.8%

U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002 (internet subscriptions), retrieved 2026-10-02. Households can report more than one type, so the shares do not add to 100. The ACS has no fixed-wireless line: those homes are counted under cable, fiber or DSL, or under other service. The thin mark on each bar is Nevada.

U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002 (internet subscriptions), retrieved 2026-10-02. Small places (under about 2,000 people) are rounded and read as about; a 0% or 100% there is a sampling artifact and is not printed. Households can report more than one type.

## Satellite share by place, ranked

- Carson City 6%

Ranked among places with reliable estimates only.

## Why is there only one row?

Carson City is a consolidated municipality: the city and the county are the same government and the same land. The Census publishes one set of figures for it, so the county row and the place row match. Population is 58,384, median household income is 72,355 dollars, the lowest of the six counties, and 21.2 percent of residents are 65 or over (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, tables B01003, B19013 and B01001).

## How do the four ZIPs differ?

89701 reports 7.6 percent satellite and 5.1 percent none on 11,101 households. 89703 reports 12.8 percent phone-only, the highest of the four. 89706 reports 4.0 percent satellite, 11.4 percent phone-only, 8.0 percent with no subscription and 6.7 percent with no computer on 8,443 households (ACS 2020-2024, B28002 and B28001). Two of these ZIPs reach outside the city: 89705 takes in Indian Hills in Douglas County and 89706 takes in Mound House, so read them as ZIPs.

## What reported service in 2021?

The FCC's June 2021 Form 477 filing lists Charter cable in 1,086 census blocks, AT&T on copper and fiber in several hundred, Net NV fixed wireless in 1,415, and satellite companies in roughly 1,400 (FCC Form 477, June 2021, historical). Sky Fiber and Preferred Networks (now powered by Rango) are also listed. The current FCC map at [broadbandmap.fcc.gov](https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov) shows each provider at any address.

## How do the businesses count?

County Business Patterns 2023 counts 1,962 establishments with 22,826 employees. The ZIP counts add to a higher number, 2,164, because several ZIPs reach past the city line (ZIP Code Business Patterns 2023). Both exclude most government employment, which matters in a state capital. The [Carson City business page](https://hdiss.net/business-internet/carson-city/) walks through the ZIP counts.

## What is planned in Carson City?

Nevada's provisional High Speed NV plan lists six projects in Carson City, about 1.4 million dollars in all: Hot Spot Broadband at Virginia City North Deer Run (estimated end January 2027) and Carson City South Carson (July 2028), DTS Fiber at McTarnahan Hill, NV Bell Telephone at Kings Canyon, and Amazon Kuiper at Stewart Community Genoa and Marlette Lake South (Nevada OSIT BEAD Final Proposal data, read 10/15/26). The list is subject to change and High Desert is not a subgrantee. See the [Carson City BEAD page](https://hdiss.net/data/bead/carson-city/).

## How does Carson City compare with its neighbors?

Next to Washoe County, Carson City reports about the same wired share, 77.8 against 78.6 percent, and a higher phone-only share, 11.0 against 9.4. Next to Douglas County, it reports less wired service, 77.8 against 81.3 percent, and a higher no-subscription share, 5.8 against 4.9 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002). Median household income is 72,355 dollars, lower than in either neighbor. The ACS cannot tell whether price, availability or choice explains any of it.

## What are the plans?

High Desert lists three plans: Bronze at $50 a month with up to 500 Mbps down, Silver at $75 with up to 800 Mbps and Gold at $99 with up to 1 Gig, each with up to 200 Mbps up and no contracts (hdiss.net, read 10/15/26). Whether a tower reaches a Carson City address depends on the path, so the [address check](https://hdiss.net/check-availability/) asks for the street address, not the ZIP.

## Where does a tower link come in?

Inside the wired blocks, most buyers compare a wired option first. A tower link is a second route, and it is the first route for an address at the foothill edge or past the last wire. Send the address and a person looks at the path from the nearest tower.

## What does the FCC's December 2025 data add for Carson City?

For Carson City, the FCC Broadband Data Collection replaces the 2021 Form 477 snapshot with location-level filings. As of December 31, 2025 (files read October 16, 2026), the county has 20,353 broadband serviceable locations. The largest land-based rows: Hot Spot Broadband, unlicensed fixed wireless, 20,353 locations (top tier up to 100 Mbps down); Net NV, unlicensed fixed wireless, 19,832 locations (top tier up to 1,000 Mbps down); Preferred Networks, unlicensed fixed wireless, 19,701 locations (top tier up to 500 Mbps down); Spectrum, cable, 19,532 locations (top tier up to 1,000 Mbps down); Verizon, licensed fixed wireless, 14,169 locations (top tier up to 300 Mbps down); AT&T, copper (DSL), 12,831 locations (top tier up to 100 Mbps down).

Read as one county, the newest filings put a wired 100/20 tier at 19,773 of 20,353 locations in Carson City and a fixed wireless 100/20 tier at 20,353, from 7 fixed wireless filers. The overlap is large; the 580 locations where a fixed wireless filing stood alone at that level are where a tower link fills a gap on the FCC's own map. The FCC counts broadband serviceable locations in Carson City, which are buildings, not households or customers, and each row is the provider's own report.

## How do income and age shape the Carson City numbers?

Two newer Census tables add who is behind the Carson City subscription numbers. There, 77.4 percent of households earning under $35,000 a year report broadband, against 98.2 percent of those at $75,000 or more (table B28004; Nevada 81.5 percent and 96.6 percent). Among residents 65 and over, 84.9 percent live in a home with broadband and 8.8 percent live in a home with no computer (table B28005; Nevada 88.1 percent and 5.7 percent). Housing built in 2010 or later is 5.6 percent of units, and housing from before 1990 64.2 percent (table B25034). All Carson City figures are from the Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, pulled October 16, 2026.

## Method

Figures are from the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates (tables B28002, B28001, B08301, B25024, B01001 and B19013), retrieved 2026-10-02, and from County and ZIP Code Business Patterns 2023. They are survey estimates with margins of error. Places under about 2,000 people are rounded to whole percents and read as about; a 0 or 100 percent for a tiny place is left out as a sampling artifact. The ACS has no fixed wireless line, so a household on a tower link is counted under cable, fiber or DSL or under other service. The ACS asks about subscriptions, not about whether a provider could serve the address.
