# Customer email

High Desert Internet email is for its customers only. Mail programs use pop.hdiss.net for incoming mail (POP3) and smtp.hdiss.net for outgoing mail (SMTP), with your full email address as the username, and webmail is available from a browser.

This page is about the email service as a whole: who can have it, how it works and what to expect. The step-by-step settings for each app are in the help center, and webmail has its own page.

## Who can have a High Desert email address?

Customers. The service agreement says email service is limited to High Desert customers. That also means an address tied to your account may end when your internet service does, so ask the office what happens to it before you cancel, and move anything important first. For how many addresses an account has, the office can say; the number is not published.

## What are the settings?

Put those into any mail program. If the program asks for a port or a security type, call and we will read them out. The [help center](https://hdiss.net/support/) has an article for each popular app.

| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Incoming mail server (POP3) | pop.hdiss.net |
| Outgoing mail server (SMTP) | smtp.hdiss.net |
| Username | Your full email address |
| Ports and encryption | Not published; call 775-575-9593 |

## What is POP3 and why does it matter?

POP3 is an older way of collecting mail. It normally downloads messages to the device that asks for them. The service agreement says mail is meant to be downloaded to a program on your computer, and that the company gives no assurance about messages that stay on the server. So the copy on your own device is the copy that counts. [POP3 versus IMAP](https://hdiss.net/guides/pop3-vs-imap/) explains the difference, and the glossary entry on [POP3](https://hdiss.net/glossary/pop3/) gives the short version.

## Why do some messages appear on one device only?

Because POP3 downloads. If your computer collected a message, your phone may never see it. A setting called leave a copy on the server helps in some programs, and [keeping email when you change devices](https://hdiss.net/guides/keeping-email-when-you-change-devices/) covers it. If you want mail on a phone and a laptop both, ask the office how to set it up.

## How do I keep my mail safe?

Back it up. Because mail is downloaded, the backup is a file on your device, and [backing up your email](https://hdiss.net/guides/backing-up-your-email/) shows a routine. Use a strong password and never share it; see [passwords and password managers](https://hdiss.net/guides/passwords-and-password-managers/). Messages that claim to come from us and ask for your password are a scam. Call to check, and read [spotting phishing from your provider](https://hdiss.net/guides/spotting-phishing-from-your-provider/).

## How do I set up a new device?

- Add an account Open the mail app and choose to add an account, then pick the option for a POP3 or other account.
- Enter the servers Incoming server pop.hdiss.net, outgoing server smtp.hdiss.net.
- Enter your login The username is your full email address, followed by your password.
- Ask for the ports If the app asks for ports or a security type, call 775-575-9593.
- Test it Send yourself a message and check that you receive it.

## What if it does not work?

The usual cases have their own articles: [cannot send but can receive](https://hdiss.net/support/email-cannot-send-but-can-receive/), [keeps asking for a password](https://hdiss.net/support/email-keeps-asking-for-password/), [missing messages](https://hdiss.net/support/email-missing-messages/) and [a bounced message](https://hdiss.net/support/email-bounced-message/). Most come down to a setting typed slightly wrong in the outgoing server details.

## Does email work when the internet is down?

You cannot send or collect mail until the connection is back, though anything already downloaded to your device can still be read. If the whole house is offline, start with the [outage page](https://hdiss.net/support/outage/).

## Is there webmail?

Yes. Customers can read mail in a browser at the webmail address on the [webmail page](https://hdiss.net/webmail/), using the full email address and password. To change the password, use [change your webmail password](https://hdiss.net/support/change-your-webmail-password/).

## What about my own domain?

If you have a domain name and want mail on it, that is a hosting question. See [web hosting](https://hdiss.net/web-hosting/) and [email on your own domain](https://hdiss.net/guides/email-on-your-own-domain/). For a domain, read [domain registration](https://hdiss.net/domain-registration/).

## Can I send large attachments?

Mail servers set their own size limits, and High Desert has not published one. For big files, use a link from a file-sharing service instead of attaching them, and ask the office what limit applies if you routinely send documents or photos. A message that bounces back for size will say so in the notice; see [a bounced message](https://hdiss.net/support/email-bounced-message/).

## What should I do about spam?

Do not reply to it or click links in it. Mark it as junk in your mail program and delete it. A message that asks you to confirm a password or a payment is a phishing attempt, whoever it claims to come from.

## Who do I ask?

Call 775-575-9593 or 775-391-5660, 9 to 5 every day, or write info@hdiss.net.
