# Why is my internet slower in the evening?

Because evening is when many households use the same shared network at once, including yours. The company publishes no figure for how much slower, and the agreement describes no step that slows particular customers.

It is a common pattern on every kind of home internet, and it deserves a straight reply. Here is what can be said and what only a record of your own readings can show.

## What happens at peak hours?

Every network has a limit on what it carries at one moment. When many neighbors stream, game and download after dinner, each gets a slice of that capacity, and the slice can shrink. Inside your house, the same pattern applies: three TVs, a game download and a video call share one connection and one Wi-Fi.

Which of these is behind your slowdown is not something this site can tell. The service agreement says temporary interruptions can occur as normal events in providing the service and that the company has no control over other networks you reach (Section 3.a). It describes no policy of slowing any customer or any kind of traffic; see [network management](https://hdiss.net/network-management/).

## How can I tell where the slowdown is?

Test at three times, say mid-morning, late afternoon and 8 pm, on an Ethernet cable. If all three look alike, the evening dip is inside the house, from Wi-Fi or other devices. If the cable reading drops only at night, write down the dates and the numbers. Pair them with what else was running. The [speed test page](https://hdiss.net/speed-test/) shows how.

Streaming at the highest quality and cloud backups at night both pull a lot at once. The guide on [how many devices is too many](https://hdiss.net/guides/how-many-devices-is-too-many/) helps you judge your own load.

## What can I do about it?

Move the heavy jobs, such as backups and game updates, to the morning. Put the important screens on a cable. If a pattern shows up on a wired test, call 775-575-9593 with your readings; they are more useful than a description. Reviewers describe the office as quick to respond when there is a problem, but nothing here promises a particular result.

Whether a higher plan helps depends on the cause, so ask the office before you pay for one.
