# Broadband Data Collection

The Broadband Data Collection is how the FCC now builds its map. Providers report by location, and the public can challenge errors.

## What is Broadband Data Collection?

The FCC's August 2026 report on advanced telecommunications capability uses BDC data as of June 30, 2025. It says the number of Americans lacking 100/20 Mbps fixed terrestrial service decreased by about 23% between June 2024 and June 2025, and by about 43% over two years, according to the project's reading of the report. The FCC pages for the program blocked the fetch on 2026-10-15, so the program's rules are not restated here.

The BDC replaced the older [FCC Form 477](https://hdiss.net/glossary/fcc-form-477/).

## Why does it matter on a fixed wireless connection?

Map data is reported by providers and is a claim about availability, not proof that a given home can connect. A fixed wireless provider needs a clear path from a tower, which a map cannot see. That is why High Desert uses an address check, and why this site says availability is decided by address.

The map is also used to decide where public money goes, including programs such as [BEAD](https://hdiss.net/glossary/bead/), so errors can matter. See [how the FCC measures broadband](https://hdiss.net/guides/how-the-fcc-measures-broadband/).

The challenge process gives individuals, local governments and others a way to dispute what a provider reported. The details of that process are on the FCC's pages, which blocked our fetch, so they are not restated here.

## What should I do about it?

Look up your address at https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov and compare it with what each listed provider tells you. If the map shows a service you cannot get, or hides one you can, you can file a challenge. Our guide [challenge the FCC map](https://hdiss.net/guides/challenge-the-fcc-map/) lays out the steps.

To ask about this company, use [Check my address](https://hdiss.net/check-availability/) or call 775-575-9593.

Keep a screenshot of the map entry for your address with the date, since entries get updated. If a provider tells you in writing that it cannot serve you, keep that too.
