# DNS Record

DNS records are the lines in a domain's address book. One says where the website is, another says where the mail goes, and others prove who may send for the name.

## What is DNS Record?

RFC 1034 says the information about a domain name is composed of separate resource records, each with an owner name, a type, a class, a time to live and data. The types you meet most are A, which points a name to an IPv4 address, AAAA for IPv6, CNAME, which makes one name an alias of another, MX for mail, and TXT for free-form text used by SPF, DKIM and DMARC. See [MX record](https://hdiss.net/glossary/mx-record/) and [SPF record](https://hdiss.net/glossary/spf-record/).

The time to live tells other computers how long to remember an answer before asking again.

## Why does it matter on a fixed wireless connection?

A change to a record spreads as old answers expire, so a new website address may show for you before it shows for a neighbor. That delay is normal. It is also why a careful move keeps the old setup running for a day or two.

For a fixed wireless customer the records live with the domain's host or registrar, not on the roof equipment, and a change of internet provider does not change them. A home connection does not alter your domain. Read [DNS records for your domain](https://hdiss.net/guides/dns-records-for-your-domain/) for the common cases.

## What should I do about it?

Before editing, copy down the whole current list. Change one record at a time, keep a note of what it was, and test after each change. A missing dot, a stray space or a duplicate of a record that must be unique can break a site or mail.

If a domain is hosted by the company, call 775-575-9593 before you change anything. See [nameserver](https://hdiss.net/glossary/nameserver/) for where the records live.
