# MoCA

MoCA reuses old TV coax as a network. If your house has coax outlets in the walls, it can give a far room a wired connection without new cable.

## What is MoCA?

The MoCA Alliance describes the technology as a networking standard that reuses existing coax wires for cost-effective, deterministic and scalable network coverage. An adapter sits at the router end and another at the far outlet, joined by the coax in the wall. A small filter at the point where the cable enters the house keeps the signal inside the house.

The Alliance page gave no specific speed figure when read on 2026-10-15, so none is printed here.

## Why does it matter on a fixed wireless connection?

A fixed wireless home does not bring coax from the street, but many houses still have it in the walls from older cable or satellite TV. In that case, MoCA is a way to bring a wired connection to a room the Wi-Fi does not reach, such as a back office or a shop. Splitters and old amplifiers can get in the way.

Compare with [powerline adapters](https://hdiss.net/glossary/powerline-adapter/) and [Cat 6 cable](https://hdiss.net/glossary/cat6-cable/). The guide [powerline and MoCA adapters](https://hdiss.net/guides/powerline-and-moca-adapters/) has a plain comparison.

## What should I do about it?

Trace the coax from the room to where it ends. If it runs to a junction with a splitter, that is usually fine. If it is cut or goes outdoors to a dish, it may not work. Call 775-575-9593 if you are unsure how your equipment fits together, and do not disconnect the outdoor cables yourself.

Make sure old cable or satellite equipment is not still feeding the line. Remove it from the coax network before adding a MoCA adapter.

Ask an electrician or a technician before cutting or splicing any cable that enters the house from outside. The outdoor cable from the roof radio is not part of a MoCA network and should not be touched.
