# Internet in Lyon County, NV: seven towns, one question about the path to a tower

About 12 percent of Lyon County households report satellite, against 7.6 percent for Nevada, and only Storey County among the six counties we work in is higher (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002). High Desert Internet Services sends fixed wireless from a tower to a small roof antenna, and a person checks each house's path to the tower.

How Lyon County gets online

- Any internet subscription 93.7%
- Cable, fiber, DSL (or fixed wireless) 71%
- Satellite 12%
- Phone data plan only 14.8%
- No internet at home 4.5%

U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002 (internet subscriptions), retrieved 2026-10-02. Households can report more than one type, so the shares do not add to 100. The ACS has no fixed-wireless line: those homes are counted under cable, fiber or DSL, or under other service. The thin mark on each bar is Nevada.

Lyon County runs from the Fernley flats on I-80, down the US-50 corridor through Dayton and Silver Springs, and south on US-95A to Yerington and the farm valleys beyond. That is a long stretch of country where a wire stops and a roof still needs a signal.

## At a glance

- Satellite: about 12 percent of Lyon County households, 2,846 of them (Census ACS 2020-2024, B28002); Nevada is 7.6 percent.
- Phone data plan only: 14.8 percent of Lyon County households, against 11.8 percent for Nevada.
- Wired subscription (cable, fiber or DSL): 71.0 percent in Lyon County, 76.6 percent in Nevada.
- Nine BEAD projects are listed for Lyon County in the state's provisional plan, subject to change (Nevada OSIT, read 10/15/26).

## How do Lyon County homes get online today?

Of 23,745 households, 71.0 percent report a cable, fiber or DSL type subscription. Another 12.0 percent report satellite, 14.8 percent rely on a cellular data plan alone, and 4.5 percent, about 1,069 households, report no internet subscription at all (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002). The Census has no line for fixed wireless, so a High Desert home is counted inside the wired figure or under other service.

Lyon County also has a manufactured-home share of 17.8 percent of housing units, a median age of 43.2 and 22.2 percent of residents aged 65 or over (ACS 2020-2024, tables B25024 and B01001). Those are homes where a roof antenna is often the practical answer, because the lot is large and the street was built before anyone planned for fiber.

## Which towns in Lyon County does High Desert work in?

The county has seven place pages here: [Fernley](https://hdiss.net/service-area/fernley/), [Dayton](https://hdiss.net/service-area/dayton/) with Silver City, [Silver Springs](https://hdiss.net/service-area/silver-springs/), [Stagecoach](https://hdiss.net/service-area/stagecoach/), [Yerington](https://hdiss.net/service-area/yerington/), [Smith Valley](https://hdiss.net/service-area/smith-valley/) and [Mound House](https://hdiss.net/service-area/mound-house/). Fernley and Yerington are named in the company's Google listing. Stagecoach, Smith Valley and Mound House are not listed by name, but they sit inside the county, which the company works in, so the address check is the only way to know about a particular street.

The US-50 stretch between Dayton and Silver Springs is where the count of satellite and phone-only homes climbs the most. The guide on [the US-50 corridor](https://hdiss.net/guides/us-50-corridor-dayton-to-silver-springs/) walks it town by town.

## What else reaches Lyon County, and what does the state plan to build?

The FCC's last Form 477 filing, June 2021, shows who reported service in the county: Charter Communications on cable, AT&T and Frontier on copper, several fixed wireless companies, T-Mobile, and the satellite companies Viasat, HughesNet and Starlink (SpaceX). It is a 2021 snapshot of the others, not a map of any address; the table further down repeats it, and broadbandmap.fcc.gov shows an address today.

Nevada's BEAD plan, which NTIA approved on January 8, 2026 after rescinding an earlier approval in June 2025, lists nine provisional projects in Lyon County. OSIT's data names Hot Spot Broadband as subgrantee for a Fernley project of 238 locations with an estimated end of November 30, 2026, and NV Bell Telephone for a project called Misfits Flat. All of it is provisional and subject to change. High Desert is not a subgrantee. The [Lyon County BEAD page](https://hdiss.net/data/bead/lyon-county/) lists every project.

## What does a Lyon County household pay for High Desert service?

High Desert publishes three plans on hdiss.net, read 10/15/26: Bronze at $50 a month with up to 500 Mbps down, Silver at $75 with up to 800 Mbps, and Gold at $99 with up to 1 Gig, each with up to 200 Mbps up and no contracts. Pages on [Bronze](https://hdiss.net/internet-plans/bronze/), [Silver](https://hdiss.net/internet-plans/silver/) and [Gold](https://hdiss.net/internet-plans/gold/) go through who each suits.

## Who lives in Lyon County: income, house age and home offices

Census figures for Lyon County put the median household income at about $81,000 (Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, tables B19013, B25034, B08301, B28004 and B28005, pulled October 16, 2026). Homes built in 2010 or later are 13.3 percent of the housing here, and homes from before 1990 are 34.4 percent (Nevada: 15.3 percent newer, 36 percent older). Working from home: 8.2 percent of workers in Lyon County, 11.9 percent for Nevada, the households that notice upload speed first. Income still shapes who subscribes: 86.1 percent of households under $35,000 a year report broadband, and 97.2 percent of those at $75,000 or more (table B28004). For residents 65 and older, 91.1 percent live with a broadband subscription at home (table B28005; Nevada 88.1 percent).

## What does the FCC's December 2025 map show for Lyon County?

Across every filer in Lyon County, at least one company reported a fixed wireless tier of 100/20 or better at 25,014 of the 25,827 locations on the map, and a cable, fiber or DSL tier at that level at 20,949. At 4,497 locations a fixed wireless filing was the only land-based 100/20 option listed; separately, 48 had no land-based filing at 25/3 or better, leaving satellite as the only reported option. A location in the Lyon County files is a building or unit where a provider says it could install service, not a household and not a subscriber, so the counts cannot be read as a share of homes. (FCC Broadband Data Collection, December 31, 2025 data, read October 16, 2026.)

## How often do wind and snow hit Lyon County?

Weather records for Lyon County come by National Weather Service forecast zone; the counts below cover 2015 through 2025 (NOAA NCEI Storm Events Database, detail files pulled October 16, 2026). The Western Nevada Basin and Range zone logged 44 high wind episodes, the most (12) in 2023, with a top gust of 76 knots (about 87 mph) in February 2025. The same zone logged 7 heavy snow episodes (most in 2018) and 5 wildfire episodes. For the Mineral/Southern Lyon zone the count is 60 high wind episodes, peaking at 12 in 2025, and the strongest gust in those rows was 91 knots (about 105 mph) (November 2024). The same zone logged 12 heavy snow episodes (most in 2021). The Greater Reno/Carson City/Minden Area zone logged 116 high wind episodes, the most (23) in 2024, with a top gust of 109 knots (about 125 mph) in November 2017. The same zone logged 44 heavy snow episodes (most in 2023) and 10 wildfire episodes. They describe the weather, not anyone's uptime. The [weather and a wireless link guide](https://hdiss.net/guides/weather-and-a-wireless-link/) covers what wind and snow do to a roof antenna.

## How fast is Lyon County adding houses?

New single-family homes authorized by permit in Lyon County, 2019 through 2025: 2,225 in all, peaking at 581 in 2021 (U.S. Census Bureau, Building Permits Survey, pulled October 16, 2026; 295 in 2019, 581 in 2021, 331 in 2023, 247 in 2025). Permits count houses, not wires: nothing in the survey says which new streets in Lyon County a cable line has reached, which is why a new build is checked by address.

Every speed is an up-to figure. What you see depends on the path from the tower to your roof, how many people are online and your Wi-Fi router. Each plan has a data transfer limit; ask us for yours at [info@hdiss.net](mailto:info@hdiss.net).

Ask about 1 Gig / 1 Gig.

Our ultra-low-latency service with upload as fast as download, in some areas. Check your address and tick "Ask about 1 Gig / 1 Gig" and we will tell you if your address can get it. [About the 1 Gig / 1 Gig service](https://hdiss.net/internet-plans/gig-symmetrical/).

Prices and speeds as published by High Desert Internet Services (hdiss.net, read 10/15/26). "Runs" lines use the FCC Household Broadband Guide and Broadband Speed Guide (fcc.gov), which the FCC calls rough guidelines; every High Desert plan is above the FCC's highest household band of more than 25 Mbps. Not sure which plan? [Use the plan picker](https://hdiss.net/#picker).

## Questions from Lyon County

### Does High Desert work everywhere in Lyon County?

No. A tower has to see the roof, and hills, trees and distance decide that house by house. Send the address and a person looks at the path from the nearest tower, then calls you back.

### Is the satellite share in Lyon County really higher than the state?

Yes. The Census reports about 12 percent of Lyon County households on satellite and 7.6 percent for Nevada; the figure is a survey estimate with a margin of error.

### Which Lyon County towns show the most satellite homes?

Stagecoach, Smith Valley and Silver Springs each show more than a fifth of households on satellite. All three are small enough that the Census treats the numbers as estimates.
