# Internet in Spanish Springs, NV: what reaches you and how to check your address

Spanish Springs is the newest large block of homes in Washoe County, and 12.3 percent of its households still report satellite, more than double Reno's 5.8 percent (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002). High Desert Internet Services sends fixed wireless from a tower to your roof, so each address is checked for a clear path first.

How Spanish Springs gets online

- Any internet subscription 96.4%
- Cable, fiber, DSL (or fixed wireless) 83.6%
- Satellite 12.3%
- Phone data plan only 8.9%
- No internet at home 2.2%

U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002 (internet subscriptions), retrieved 2026-10-02. Households can report more than one type, so the shares do not add to 100. The ACS has no fixed-wireless line: those homes are counted under cable, fiber or DSL, or under other service. The thin mark on each bar is Nevada.

## Terrain and line of sight in Spanish Springs

The valley opens north from Sparks along Pyramid Highway and is ringed by hills, with the housing laid on the benches and slopes that climb out of the valley floor. A bench gives a wide view, which a radio link likes. A cul-de-sac tucked behind the next slope does not.

Nearly all homes are detached houses, so the antenna usually goes on the house itself, and the technician looks for the roof spot with the widest view.

About 18,000 people live in the Spanish Springs valley, 32 minutes by road from downtown Reno at roughly 4,735 feet. The median home was built in 2002, nearly all are detached houses, and the median household income is $127,658 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year).

## At a glance

- Spanish Springs (6,685 households): 83.6 percent wired, 12.3 percent satellite, 8.9 percent cellular only, 2.2 percent none (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002).
- About 824 households report satellite, the largest single group outside the wired majority.
- The state's BEAD list has a Spanish Springs project of about $12.8 million, provisional and subject to change (Nevada OSIT, read 10/15/26).

## Why is Spanish Springs's satellite share double Reno's?

The Census reports the share, not the reason. 824 of 6,685 households report a satellite subscription, while 8.9 percent rely on a cellular plan only and 2.2 percent, about 144 homes, report no internet (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002). Households can report more than one type, so the shares do not add to 100.

What the numbers do show is a valley where wired service is the majority but satellite is common enough that many owners have already had to look for another option.

## What do the people who live here look like to a provider?

Owner-occupied homes make up 91.9 percent of housing, 19.5 percent of residents are 65 or older, and the commute averages 33.0 minutes. About 911 workers work from home, 10.3 percent, close to the county's 12.6 percent. Steady upload matters to them, so High Desert's published up to 200 Mbps up on every plan is relevant. Propane heats 4.6 percent of homes, a small rural-edge marker.

## What else reaches Spanish Springs?

The FCC's June 2021 Form 477 filing lists cable, DSL, fiber, satellite and fixed-wireless providers reporting service in Washoe County; the table below is that snapshot. For today, use broadbandmap.fcc.gov. Fixed-wireless companies Avant Wireless and Rango name Spanish Springs or its ZIPs on their own sites (read 10/15/26), and Starlink, T-Mobile and Verizon show their options after an address is typed in. Sorting those choices is easier with the [providers-at-your-address guide](https://hdiss.net/guides/check-which-providers-reach-your-address/).

## What is the BEAD project in Spanish Springs?

Nevada's Final Proposal data lists a Spanish Springs project with Hot Spot Broadband as subgrantee, about $12.8 million in support and an estimated end of January 2027 (OSIT, read 10/15/26). That is the state's plan after NTIA's January 8, 2026 approval, still provisional. High Desert is not a subgrantee. If a new option does arrive, compare it with the [plans page](https://hdiss.net/internet-plans/); do not plan around it before it is built. The [project record](https://hdiss.net/data/bead/washoe-county/spanish-springs/) carries the details.

## What does High Desert charge in Spanish Springs?

The published plans, when a tower can see your roof, are Bronze at $50 a month up to 500 Mbps down, Silver at $75 up to 800 Mbps and Gold at $99 up to 1 Gig, all with up to 200 Mbps up and no contract (hdiss.net, read 10/15/26). The [Pyramid Highway guide](https://hdiss.net/guides/pyramid-highway-corridor-internet/) covers the corridor north of here.

## What happens after I send my address?

The office, open 9 to 5 every day, looks at the straight line between the nearest tower and your roof and phones you back. A technician confirms the antenna spot at the house if it looks clear.

## Who are the households in Spanish Springs, by the newest Census tables?

For Spanish Springs the Census median household income is about $128,000, against $78,000 for Nevada (Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, tables B19013, B25034, B08301, B28004 and B28005, pulled October 16, 2026). The housing splits 19.6 percent built since 2010 and 16.2 percent built before 1990, where Nevada's split is 15.3 percent and 36 percent. Newer streets in Spanish Springs raise the question of whether a wire has caught up with the houses, which no Census table answers; each provider answers it for an address. The work-from-home share is 10.3 percent of workers (Nevada 11.9 percent), the group for whom a steady upload matters most. Broadband subscriptions run 79.2 percent in households under $35,000 a year and 97.7 percent at $75,000 and up (table B28004). Among people 65 and over, the share in a home with broadband is 91.8 percent, by table B28005, with Nevada at 88.1 percent.

## How many new homes are going up around Spanish Springs?

The Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey counts 4,019 new single-family homes authorized in unincorporated Washoe County from 2019 through 2025 (593 in 2019, 683 in 2021, 508 in 2023, 488 in 2025), with the high year 2021 at 683 (annual permit files, pulled October 16, 2026). The survey does not split that figure by community, so Spanish Springs is one part of it. A permit is not a finished house, and the survey says nothing about whether a cable or fiber line reaches the new streets of Spanish Springs; there it is worth asking every provider, by address.

Every speed is an up-to figure. What you see depends on the path from the tower to your roof, how many people are online and your Wi-Fi router. Each plan has a data transfer limit; ask us for yours at [info@hdiss.net](mailto:info@hdiss.net).

Ask about 1 Gig / 1 Gig.

Our ultra-low-latency service with upload as fast as download, in some areas. Check your address and tick "Ask about 1 Gig / 1 Gig" and we will tell you if your address can get it. [About the 1 Gig / 1 Gig service](https://hdiss.net/internet-plans/gig-symmetrical/).

Prices and speeds as published by High Desert Internet Services (hdiss.net, read 10/15/26). "Runs" lines use the FCC Household Broadband Guide and Broadband Speed Guide (fcc.gov), which the FCC calls rough guidelines; every High Desert plan is above the FCC's highest household band of more than 25 Mbps. ## Questions from Spanish Springs

### Is there internet in Spanish Springs without satellite?

Yes. Most households report a cable, fiber or DSL type subscription, and cellular and fixed-wireless options exist too. High Desert is a tower-based option checked by address.

### Do Spanish Springs and Sparks share a ZIP?

Yes, ZIPs 89436 and 89441 cover both. A mailing ZIP does not tell us whether a house can see a tower, so we ask for the address.

### Do hills block the signal here?

They can. A rise between your roof and the tower stops the radio line. A different roof spot sometimes clears it.
