# Change your webmail password

Sign in to webmail with your full email address, open the settings area, find the change password option, enter the current password and then the new one. Afterward, update the saved password in every program and phone that collects your mail. If you have forgotten the current password, call 775-575-9593 because the webmail screen needs it.

A password change is a two-part job. The first part takes a minute. The second part, fixing the places that still remember the old password, is the one people skip, and it is why mail suddenly stops arriving afterward.

## Steps

- Open webmail Go to [the webmail page](https://hdiss.net/webmail/) and use the link to sign in. The sign-in address is the Roundcube page at hdissmail.hdiss.net/mail.
- Sign in with your full address The user name is your complete email address. Type your present password and sign in.
- Open Preferences Our old support page says: click on Preferences, then Change password. Webmail menus can be worded a little differently, so look for Settings or Preferences and a Password item beneath it.
- Enter the old password, then the new one Type the current password, then the password you want. Type the new one a second time if the form asks. Use something long that you have not used elsewhere; the guide on [passwords and password managers](https://hdiss.net/guides/passwords-and-password-managers/) shows a simple way.
- Save the change Click Save. Webmail should say the password was changed. Sign out and sign in again with the new one to prove it.
- Update your mail programs Open each program or phone that collects hdiss.net mail and enter the new password in its account settings. The Outlook article, the iPhone article and the others in the [help center](https://hdiss.net/support/) show where each one keeps it.
- Send a test message Send yourself a short message from the program you updated, and check that it arrives.

## What if I forgot my password?

The change screen in webmail asks for the current password, so it cannot help if you do not know it. Call 775-575-9593 or 775-391-5660 between 9 and 5, any day. A person will tell you how to get back in. We do not publish a self-service reset page, and we will not ask you to send a password by email.

## Why did mail stop after I changed it?

Every program that collects mail keeps its own saved copy of the password. After a change, the old copy fails, and the program may show a password prompt or an error with the words authentication failed. Enter the new password there. A phone that asks again and again, even after you type it, usually has a second saved copy in a different screen, such as the outgoing server settings. Check both.

## Is the new password the same on the sending side?

Yes for most programs, which use the same name and password to send through smtp.hdiss.net as to receive from pop.hdiss.net. A few programs keep a separate field for each. If yours does, fill in both. Port and security settings are not published here, so call us if a screen asks for those.

## Is it safe to give my password to someone who calls me?

No. A caller who claims to be from your internet provider and asks for a password is a reason to hang up and call a number you already know. The guide on [tech support scam calls](https://hdiss.net/guides/tech-support-scam-calls/) lists the signs. High Desert Internet staff will not need your password to help with this page.

## Does changing the password change the server names?

No. The names stay pop.hdiss.net for incoming mail and smtp.hdiss.net for outgoing mail, and your username stays your full address. Only the password changes. If a program asks you to set up the account again from scratch, you can, but it rarely needs to.

## What makes a good password for this?

Length matters more than tricks. A few unrelated words strung together is easier to remember and harder to guess than a short mix of symbols. Do not reuse the one from your bank. The guide on [two-step verification](https://hdiss.net/guides/two-step-verification/) covers extra protection on accounts that offer it; ask us whether webmail does.

## Related questions

### Where is the change password option?

Under Preferences or Settings in webmail, according to our old support page. Look for Password.

### Does the new password change my billing login?

The payment page is a separate system. See the pay online page for that sign-in.

### How strong should the password be?

Long, unique and not used on another site. A password manager helps.
