# HDISS email and the Outlook app on a phone

Microsoft's page says you cannot add a POP email account to Outlook for iOS. It says you can add one to Outlook for Android, where you choose IMAP or POP3. High Desert Internet mail is POP3 at pop.hdiss.net, so Android can take it and an iPhone cannot, using that app.

The Outlook app on a phone is not the same program as Outlook on a computer. Microsoft documents the two phone versions separately, and they treat POP differently. Find your phone in the list below and follow only that path.

## Steps

- Decide which phone you have Outlook for iOS is the version for iPhone and iPad. Outlook for Android is the version for Android phones and tablets. Only the second accepts a POP account.
- On an iPhone or iPad, use a different app Microsoft states the iOS app cannot add a POP account and gives no workaround. Use the Mail app that came with the phone. The matching article is [iPhone or iPad with iOS 18 or iOS 26](https://hdiss.net/support/email-iphone-ios-18-and-26/).
- On Android, open Outlook settings Microsoft's page says to open Settings in the app, then Add Account, then Add Email Account.
- Enter your full address and tap Continue Type name@yourdomain.com. Outlook will try to find settings by itself and may fail. That is expected.
- Choose POP3 when asked for the type The page says you pick IMAP or POP3. Choose POP3.
- Fill in the server details Incoming server pop.hdiss.net, outgoing server smtp.hdiss.net, user name your full address and your password. Do not guess at port numbers. They are not published, and 775-575-9593 reaches someone who has them.
- Send a test message Write yourself a short note, send it, and check that it arrives. Then check webmail to see whether the copy was kept on the server.

## Why can the Android app do it and the iPhone app cannot?

Microsoft's page does not explain the difference. It states each fact: no POP on iOS, POP allowed on Android. A web search turns up older Microsoft text that suggested forwarding POP mail through an Outlook.com account for phones. That older advice is not on the current page, and it would put a second copy of your mail on another service.

## Does a phone app replace Outlook on my computer?

It is a separate account setup. With POP, the message goes to whichever device downloads first, unless a leave-a-copy option is on. The guide on [POP3 versus IMAP](https://hdiss.net/guides/pop3-vs-imap/) explains why people end up with half the mail on each device. If you want one view of everything, [webmail](https://hdiss.net/webmail/) works from any phone browser.

## What if I only need to check mail occasionally?

Open the webmail page in the phone's browser and sign in. Bookmark it. There is nothing to configure and no app to update.

## Do I need to go outside or touch the antenna for this?

This task never calls for a ladder. The outdoor radio and the cable that runs to it should not be touched by anyone but our technician.

Either one, but a phone on your home network uses the High Desert connection when it is on Wi-Fi.

### The Android app offers only IMAP.

Call 775-575-9593 and describe what the list shows. Do not pick IMAP.

### Can I use the iPhone app for my other accounts?

Yes. It is only the hdiss.net POP account that it will not take.
