# Connect a Sony, TCL or Hisense Google TV and fix buffering

On a Google TV set, open Settings from the top right of the home screen, go to the network and internet choice, and select your Wi-Fi name. Menu names differ by maker and year, so treat the steps as the shape to look for. If it buffers, test a cable.

Several TV makers use Google TV as the software on their sets. Google's page about changing Wi-Fi on streaming devices describes the settings area in the top right, and the sets follow the same pattern. The maker adds its own network menus on top, which is why this page gives a pattern, not a quote.

## Steps

- Open Settings from the top right Google's page names this spot for its streaming devices. On a TV set it is the same gear icon.
- Find Network and Internet Look for a heading with that name or one close to it, such as Network or Wi-Fi.
- Pick your Wi-Fi and type the password If it does not appear, scroll down for a rescan option.
- Check the status line Most sets show Connected, a signal bar or an address under the network name. No address means the TV did not get one from the router.
- Use the maker's test if there is one Some sets include a built-in check. Look for Network test or Connection status in the same area.
- Plug in a cable if the TV has a port Run an Ethernet cable from the TV to the router. The set then uses the cable, which avoids Wi-Fi problems at the TV.
- Restart the TV and router Hold the power button or unplug the TV, then restart the router as in the restart page.

## What is different from the Google TV Streamer?

The software looks the same, but a TV set has a built-in Wi-Fi chip that the maker chose, and its antenna sits inside a thick screen. That is why a set can have a weaker signal than a streamer at the same spot. If your set reports poor signal, try a cable or a mesh node. See [Google TV Streamer and Chromecast](https://hdiss.net/support/tv-google-tv-streamer/).

## Why does the TV forget Wi-Fi after a power cut?

It should not. If it does, the network may have a different name after the router restarted, or the router did not come up before the TV. Wait for the router, then repeat the steps. [After a power outage](https://hdiss.net/support/after-a-power-outage/) shows the order.

## Is the TV or the internet to blame?

Test a phone beside the TV. If the phone is fast and the TV buffers, the TV's Wi-Fi spot is the cause. The guide [Ethernet for the things that matter](https://hdiss.net/guides/ethernet-for-the-things-that-matter/) explains when a cable is worth it.

## Do I need to go outside or touch the antenna for this?

None of these steps involve the outdoor equipment. Do not climb to it, and do not pull or bend its cable. If you think it is the cause, call.
