Fiber to the Home
Fiber to the home sends light along glass strands to the building. It is a fine technology that reaches only the places where a company has built it.

What is Fiber to the Home?
A fiber connection carries data as pulses of light through a glass strand, ending at a small box at the home. The glass loses very little signal over distance, which is why fiber suits trunk lines between towns. Running that strand to every driveway is where the cost lies, since it means trenching or hanging cable past each lot.
The Fiber Broadband Association's home page did not give a definition when read on 2026-10-15, so the description above is general and not quoted from it.
Fiber is also used in the middle of other networks. Cable companies run it to neighborhood nodes, and wireless providers may use it to reach a tower. The phrase to the home means the glass goes the whole way, with no copper or coax in the last stretch.
Why does it matter on a fixed wireless connection?
NTIA's January 2026 overview of Nevada's BEAD plan lists fiber-to-the-premises for 17,023 of 26,236 BEAD-eligible locations, which is 64.9%. These are the state's provisional plans, subject to change. See BEAD and the High Speed NV and rural roads guide.
High Desert does not describe itself as a fiber provider. Fiber also sits inside a wireless network. See backhaul for how a tower may reach the wider internet.
What should I do about it?
If fiber is offered at your address, ask the provider for the plan price after any introductory period, the contract term and the equipment charge. Our questions to ask any provider is a checklist.
If it is not offered, a wireless link may be an option. Use Check my address or call 775-575-9593.
Whichever technology reaches you, write down what you pay for, the speed it advertises, and the date. A written record makes it easier to compare a fiber offer with a wireless one later, and it keeps you from relying on memory when a promotion ends.
