Internet in Virginia City, NV: what reaches you and how to check your address
About a quarter of Virginia City households report satellite and about 18 percent report no internet subscription, while only about 57 percent report a cable, fiber or DSL type subscription (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002). High Desert Internet Services sends fixed wireless from a tower to the roof, and on a mountainside the exact roof decides everything.

How Virginia City gets online
U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002 (internet subscriptions), retrieved 2026-10-02. Households can report more than one type, so the shares do not add to 100. The ACS has no fixed-wireless line: those homes are counted under cable, fiber or DSL, or under other service. The thin mark on each bar is Nevada.
Terrain and line of sight in Virginia City
At about 6,100 feet this is the highest place we list (USGS 3DEP, at the Census point). A mountainside is the hardest and the most rewarding terrain for a tower link. Houses facing the valley below can see a long way, while houses tucked against the slope or behind another hill see nothing.
Old stone and brick buildings also matter. Thick masonry walls block radio, so the antenna sits outside, on a roof or pole with a view, and cable runs inside. The technician decides where on site.
Virginia City is a mining-era town on the side of Mount Davidson, with streets that climb, buildings that date from the 1800s, and a tourist trade along C Street. It is also a place where homes, shops and saloons all want a connection that the old street plan never anticipated.
How do Virginia City homes get online today?
Of about 336 households, about 57 percent report a cable, fiber or DSL type subscription, about 26 percent satellite and about 10 percent a phone plan only; about 18 percent, roughly 60 households, report no subscription (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002, rounded). Nevada is 76.6 percent wired, 7.6 percent satellite and 5.3 percent without a subscription. A place this small carries wide margins, so take the pattern, not the decimals.
The median home was built in 1956, about 33 percent of residents are 65 or over, and about 19 percent of workers work from home, against 11.9 percent for Nevada (ACS 2020-2024). Working from home on a hillside with no wire is the case a tower link is meant for.
What about the tourism businesses?
ZIP 89440 has 66 business establishments with 406 employees (ZIP Code Business Patterns 2023). Shops, museums and restaurants take card payments and run cameras, and the card reader and point-of-sale guide covers what those need from a line. The plan pages say what each speed supports; no response-time promise is published, so ask by phone for anything business-critical.
Who else reports service on the Comstock?
CC Communications, the Churchill County fiber company, says on its site (read 10/15/26) that it is expanding to Virginia City; what that means for a given street is a question for that company. Rango's site lists a Dayton-Virginia City region (read 10/15/26). The FCC's June 2021 Form 477 filing for Storey County lists Net NV and Sky Fiber on fixed wireless, Charter on cable in a handful of blocks, AT&T and the satellite providers. See CC Communications for Storey County for its published facts.
What plans can a Comstock household choose from?
Bronze is $50 a month with up to 500 Mbps down, Silver $75 with up to 800, Gold $99 with up to 1 Gig, and every plan publishes up to 200 Mbps up (hdiss.net, read 10/15/26). Send the address; a person looks at the path from the nearest tower and calls you back.
Who are the households in Virginia City, by the newest Census tables?
For Virginia City the Census median household income is about $114,000, against $78,000 for Nevada (Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, tables B19013, B25034, B08301, B28004 and B28005, pulled October 16, 2026). The work-from-home share is about 19 percent of workers (Nevada 11.9 percent), the group for whom a steady upload matters most. Among people 65 and over, the share in a home with broadband is about 71 percent, by table B28005, with Nevada at 88.1 percent. The Virginia City figures are survey estimates for a small place, so they are rounded and carry wide margins.

Still have a question? Call 775-575-9593, 9 to 5 every day.
Can a stone building hold an antenna?
The antenna goes outside, on a roof or pole. The technician chooses the spot and how the cable enters the building.
Is Virginia City in Storey County?
Yes. It is the county seat, and the county's overall satellite share is 22.5 percent of households.
Why are so many Virginia City households without internet?
The Census reports about 18 percent without a subscription and does not say why. Cost, choice and lack of a wire all show up in that number.
