How Carson City gets online

  • Any internet subscription92.2%
  • Cable, fiber, DSL (or fixed wireless)77.8%
  • Satellite6%
  • Phone data plan only11%
  • No internet at home5.8%

U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002 (internet subscriptions), retrieved 2026-10-02. Households can report more than one type, so the shares do not add to 100. The ACS has no fixed-wireless line: those homes are counted under cable, fiber or DSL, or under other service. The thin mark on each bar is Nevada.

Terrain and line of sight in Carson City

The city sits at about 4,650 feet on the Eagle Valley floor, at the foot of the Carson Range. East of Carson Street the ground is broad and open. West of it the ground rises in benches and canyons, and Kings Canyon climbs toward the ridge. A tower on the valley floor looks across flat land at one house and up a slope at the next.

Older neighborhoods with mature trees and two-story houses are the harder case for any radio path, because those are exactly what stands between a roof and a tower. Newer streets with young trees are usually easier.

Because Carson City is both a city and a county, this page does the work of a town page and a county page at once. The numbers are for the whole consolidated city. The terrain is what varies, from the flat valley floor in the east to the canyons and benches that climb west toward the Sierra.

Who offers internet in Carson City, NV?

Eight providers are in the table above, and the list falls into groups. Spectrum publishes cable plans and AT&T publishes fiber, internet and Internet Air plans, each with an address check on its own site. Net NV, Rango and Sky Fiber send fixed wireless from towers, as High Desert does. Starlink and Viasat come from the sky and need no street at all.

The FCC's June 2021 Form 477 filing reports which companies said they could serve at least one location in each census block. For Carson City it lists Charter on cable, AT&T on fiber and copper, Net NV, Sky Fiber and others on fixed wireless, and Viasat, HughesNet and Starlink on satellite. It is a dated picture, not a promise for your street, and the current one is at broadbandmap.fcc.gov.

How do Carson City homes get online today?

Of 23,692 households, 77.8 percent report a cable, fiber or DSL type subscription, 6.0 percent satellite (1,412 households), 11.0 percent a cellular plan only and 5.8 percent, about 1,364 households, no subscription (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, table B28002). Nevada is 76.6 percent wired, 7.6 percent satellite, 11.8 percent phone-only and 5.3 percent without a subscription. Carson City is a lot like the state on wires and a little lower on satellite.

Median household income is $72,355, 62.3 percent of homes are owner-occupied, the median home was built in 1981 and 21.2 percent of residents are 65 or over (ACS 2020-2024). The city has 1,962 business establishments with 22,826 employees (County Business Patterns 2023).

Where do the wires thin out in Carson City?

Mostly at the edges: the west-side benches and canyons, the high lots toward Kings Canyon, and the east and north fringe where the city meets Lyon County and Douglas County. Manufactured homes are 9.8 percent of housing, a share where a roof antenna on a low roofline is a familiar job. Mound House, just east on US-50, has its own page, and the ZIPs 89701, 89703, 89705 and 89706 each have a page of their own.

Which High Desert plan fits a Carson City household?

Bronze is $50 a month with up to 500 Mbps down, Silver $75 with up to 800, and Gold $99 with up to 1 Gig. Every plan publishes up to 200 Mbps up and no contract (hdiss.net, read 10/15/26). Work from home is 9.8 percent of Carson City workers against 11.9 percent in Nevada, and the working-from-home page explains what a video-call day needs. A small office can read business internet in Carson City.

What does the state plan for Carson City?

Nevada's BEAD plan, which NTIA approved on January 8, 2026 after rescinding the first approval in June 2025, lists six provisional Carson City projects in OSIT's data (read 10/15/26). NV Bell Telephone is listed as subgrantee for Kings Canyon, a fiber project of 442 locations with an estimated end of September 4, 2029, and DTS Fiber for McTarnahan Hill, 55 locations, estimated November 30, 2028. Hot Spot Broadband is listed for a Carson City South Carson project of 22 locations using licensed fixed wireless, estimated July 31, 2028. All of it is subject to change pending NTIA and NIST review, and High Desert is not a subgrantee. The Carson City BEAD page lists the rest.

What happens after you send a Carson City address?

A person looks at the path from the nearest tower and calls you back. If it looks clear, a technician confirms it at the house. Nothing is decided by a form on its own, and the office answers 9 to 5, seven days a week at 775-575-9593.

What do house age, income and home offices look like in Carson City?

Census figures for Carson City put the median household income at about $72,000 (Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, tables B19013, B25034, B08301, B28004 and B28005, pulled October 16, 2026). Homes built in 2010 or later are 5.6 percent of the housing here, and homes from before 1990 are 64.2 percent (Nevada: 15.3 percent newer, 36 percent older). With that much older housing in Carson City, where the router sits and how the rooms are laid out often decides the Wi-Fi more than the service does. Working from home: 9.8 percent of workers in Carson City, 11.9 percent for Nevada, the households that notice upload speed first. Income still shapes who subscribes: 77.4 percent of households under $35,000 a year report broadband, and 98.2 percent of those at $75,000 or more (table B28004). For residents 65 and older, 84.9 percent live with a broadband subscription at home (table B28005; Nevada 88.1 percent).

How many new homes are going up around Carson City?

The Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey counts 1,390 new single-family homes authorized in Carson City from 2019 through 2025 (172 in 2019, 203 in 2021, 153 in 2023, 322 in 2025), with the high year 2025 at 322 (annual permit files, pulled October 16, 2026). A permit is not a finished house, and the survey says nothing about whether a cable or fiber line reaches the new streets of Carson City; there it is worth asking every provider, by address.

What does the FCC's December 2025 map show for Carson City?

Every Carson City number here carries the FCC's caveat that a listed location is a provider's claim it could connect that building within ten business days, and the agency asks the public to challenge the map where that is wrong. With that said, Carson City shows 19,773 of 20,353 locations with a wired 100/20 filing and 580 where only a fixed wireless filing reached 100/20. The Carson City location counts are buildings, not homes or customers, and they come from each company's own filing to the FCC. (FCC Broadband Data Collection, December 31, 2025 data, read October 16, 2026.)

How often do wind and snow hit Carson City?

NOAA's Storm Events Database for 2015 through 2025, read by the forecast zones around Carson City (NCEI detail files, pulled October 16, 2026), gives these counts. For the Greater Reno/Carson City/Minden Area zone the count is 116 high wind episodes, peaking at 23 in 2024, and the strongest gust in those rows was 109 knots (about 125 mph) (November 2017). The same zone logged 44 heavy snow episodes (most in 2023) and 10 wildfire episodes. The Greater Lake Tahoe Area zone logged 91 high wind episodes, the most (17) in 2024, with a top gust of 118 knots (about 136 mph) in February 2025. The same zone logged 95 heavy snow episodes (most in 2023). The counts say nothing about any provider's network; what wind and snow mean for a roof antenna is in the weather guide.

Questions from Carson City

Still have a question? Call 775-575-9593, 9 to 5 every day.

Is Carson City all wired?

No. The Census reports 77.8 percent wired, 6.0 percent satellite and 5.8 percent without a subscription; the edges of the city are where wires thin out.

Does High Desert serve Carson City?

It is named in the company's Google listing as a place it works. Whether it reaches your roof depends on a clear path to a tower, which is checked by address.

Is Kings Canyon different from the valley floor?

Often. A slope can give a clear view of a tower or hide one, so the check is done on the roof.

How is Carson City counted in the data pages?

As one consolidated city-county, so its Census figures are for the whole city.
