Put a Brother printer on your Wi-Fi

On a Brother printer with an LCD, go to Menu, Network, WLAN, then Setup Wizard, pick your network and type the password. Touchscreen models use the Wi-Fi icon, then Setup Wizard or Find Wi-Fi Network. WPS works too: press the router's WPS button, then the printer's within two minutes.

Brother's wireless pages start by telling you to get your network name and password from the router or modem. If you changed them, use the new ones. The rest is a short wizard.

Steps

  1. Gather the Wi-Fi name and password

Brother says to take the SSID and network key from the router. Use any new ones you set.

  2. Open the wireless menu

LCD models: Menu, Network, WLAN, Setup Wizard. Touchscreens: the Wi-Fi icon, then Setup Wizard or Find Wi-Fi Network.

  3. Enable wireless if asked

    The printer scans for networks.

  4. Select your network

    Type the password carefully.

  5. Or use WPS

Press the router's WPS button, then the printer's within two minutes. It skips typing a Wi-Fi password but needs a router with a WPS button.

  6. Use Brother Mobile Connect if you prefer

The app can walk through Wi-Fi setup from a phone.

  7. Print a test page

From the computer and the phone.

Why does Brother mention a computer setup?

Some Brother pages use a driver package with a Wireless Device Setup Wizard in a Utilities folder, with a temporary USB cable. It is the older route and works the same way in the end.

The printer cannot find my network.

Move it closer, make sure the router is not hiding its name, and offer a 2.4 GHz name. See the band-split article.

The printer shows offline later.

Read printer shows offline after a new router.

Why does Brother ask for the network key and not the Wi-Fi password?

They are the same thing under two names. The network key, also called the security key or passphrase, is the password you type on a phone to join Wi-Fi. Brother's page uses the older term. Look for it on the label on the router if you never changed it, or in the router's own app if you did.

If you are not sure which name is yours, check that the printer and your phone show the same one. A printer joined to the 2.4 GHz name and a phone on a separate 5 GHz name can still print to each other on most home routers, but a guest network will block it. If printing then fails, the printer-offline page walks the checks.

Do I need to go outside or touch the antenna for this?

Work from inside the house only. If the trouble seems to be at the antenna, leave the radio and its cable alone and call; a technician will come.
