Reconnect Google Nest speakers and displays after a new router or password

Open the Google Home app, press and hold the device's tile, go to Settings, then Device information, then Wi-Fi, and forget the current network. Then tap Add, choose Device, and follow the steps to join the new one. Google says to factory reset the device if those steps fail.

A Nest speaker or display remembers one network. When the router changes, it has to be told the new name and password. Google's help page has the exact path, and it is short.

Steps

  1. Use the same Google account on your phone

Google's page says your phone or tablet must use the same Google account as the device.

  2. Open the Home app and find the device

Go to Home, then All devices. Press and hold the device's tile.

  3. Open Settings, then Device information

    Google lists this path.

  4. Tap Wi-Fi and forget the network

Google says to select Wi-Fi and choose the option to forget the current network.

  5. Return to the Home screen and tap Add

Choose Device and search for your device.

  6. Follow the steps to join the new network

Pick the new Wi-Fi name and type the password.

  7. Factory reset only if the steps fail

Google says to reset the device if you get the error that the app could not communicate with it or you cannot change the network in the app.

Is there a shortcut if I have many Nest devices?

A Google Nest community answer suggests giving the new router the same Wi-Fi name and password as the old one, so the devices reconnect on their own. If your router lets you set the name and password, that saves repeating the steps on each device. See setting up a new router.

Why does the Nest display show no network?

It lost the old network and cannot find the new one. Check that the router is on and that other devices have internet. If the whole house is offline, begin with the five checks.

Does the speaker affect my data?

Streaming music uses data, but much less than video. The guide on how much data music and audio use gives figures.

What if the speaker cannot be found in the app?

Make sure the phone is on the same Wi-Fi network the speaker last used, or on the new one if the speaker has not yet been told. Open the Google Home app, pull down to refresh the device list, and check that Bluetooth and location permissions are on if the app asks for them. A speaker with a spinning light has not found a network.

If you replaced the router and cannot get the old network back, the speaker needs the reset Google describes. Hold the speaker's reset control as its page for your model says, wait for it to restart, and begin the Add flow again. This clears the speaker's own settings, not your account. Still stuck? Do I need to go outside or touch the antenna for this?

This task never calls for a ladder. The outdoor radio and the cable that runs to it should not be touched by anyone but our technician.
