Connect a Vizio smart TV and fix buffering

On a Vizio TV, press Menu, go to Network, choose Wireless or Wired, pick your Wi-Fi name and type the password, then run Test Connection. The steps may differ on your model. If it buffers, try a cable or move the router.

Vizio's support site has an article on connecting during setup, with wired and wireless choices and a network test. It returned an error when fetched, so this page flags its steps as generic rather than quoting it.

Steps

  1. Press Menu and choose Network

Third-party guides place the network settings here.

  2. Choose Wireless or Wired

Wired needs a cable from the TV to the router.

  3. Pick your Wi-Fi name and enter the password

Use the on-screen keyboard. Take your time with capital letters.

  4. Run Test Connection

Guides place it under Menu, Network. A success result means the TV is online.

  5. If the test fails, restart the router

Follow restarting your equipment, then test again.

  6. Check another device

If a phone is online in the same room and the TV is not, forget the network on the TV and rejoin.

  7. Consider a cable

Where the TV is far from the router, a cable or a mesh node helps more than repeated restarts.

Why did the TV lose its connection after a router change?

It remembers the old network name and password. Pick the new name, or give the new router the old name and password. See setting up a new router.

Why does a show buffer when the test passes?

A test is a snapshot. Buffering shows up when the signal dips for a moment or other people are using the connection. Check why video calls freeze, which describes the same kind of dip. Plans are listed with up to speeds on the plans page.

Is Vizio's own guidance different?

It may be. If your screens differ from the ones described here, call 775-575-9593 and describe them, or open Vizio's support site for your model number.

What should I try if the TV connects and then drops?

Look at where the TV sits. A television mounted flat to a wall, with metal behind it or a cabinet around it, often gets a weaker signal than a phone held in the same room. Pull the TV out a few inches, or test with the phone held at the TV's height. If the phone is strong and the TV is not, a cable or a mesh node near the TV fixes it better than another restart.

If the TV drops only at the same hour each evening, other devices are probably busy at that time. Look at what is running, such as a game download or cloud backup, and see whether pausing it helps. The checklist in slow internet checklist walks through the order. Still stuck? Call 775-575-9593 and a person answers from nine to five every day.

Do I need to go outside or touch the antenna for this?

Nothing on this page needs you to go outside. Never climb to the antenna or touch the outdoor radio or its cable; call and a technician comes to the house.
