Blink cameras on your High Desert connection

Blink's network page says its devices need a minimum upload speed of 2 Mbps, held consistently, and connect only to 2.4 GHz networks (802.11 b/g/n), including when a router merges its bands. It asks for three signal bars at the Sync Module and each camera, with the module near the router.

Blink cameras connect to a Sync Module, which connects to your Wi-Fi. That makes the module's spot the one that matters most. Blink's requirements page is specific about it, which makes this a short checklist.

Steps

  1. Check the band

Blink's page says its products connect only to 2.4 GHz and will not respond on 5 GHz. A router that merges both bands under one name can send the module to the wrong one, so split them with the band-split article.

  2. Place the Sync Module near the router

Blink recommends about 3 to 10 feet from the router and not inside a cabinet or basement.

  3. Check the bars

In the Blink app go to Device Settings, General Settings, Network. Blink asks for three bars at the module and at each camera. Two or fewer causes trouble.

  4. Stay within the range Blink states

In a single building, the page says the module can reach cameras up to about 100 feet away.

  5. Pause other uploads while you test

Blink suggests suspending streaming and gaming while you test the connection.

  6. Test your upload

Use the speed test guide. Blink wants at least 2 Mbps upload steadily, not just once.

  7. Check the router settings Blink lists

Blink's page says the network should use DHCP and security of WEP, WPA or WPA2 with TKIP.

Does it matter if the module stores video locally?

A forum user says Blink still wants the upload to the cloud for recording even when you store clips on the module. That is a user report, not a Blink statement. Check the Sync Module page. Every service level carries a data transfer limit in the service agreement; ask info@hdiss.net for the size. Use over the limit is billed at $1 per gigabyte in a billing cycle.

Why does a camera show two bars?

It is too far from the module, or something in the wall is in the way. Move the camera closer, move the module, or add a node. Stucco, adobe and metal walls describes what hurts a signal.

It can, but a second router adds a layer and confuses setup. Keep to one router fed by the injector cable, as in the setup articles.

Do I need to go outside or touch the antenna for this?

Indoor work only. The radio on your roof or pole, and the cable to it, stay untouched; ring 775-575-9593 and we send a technician.
