HP's printer setup page lists three ways to put a printer on Wi-Fi. The HP Smart app is the one HP recommends. Your model's own screens come first where they differ.
Steps
- Check your Wi-Fi name and password
Have them ready. If the router has two names, the printer may only see the 2.4 GHz one.
- Put the printer in Wi-Fi setup mode
HP's page says the wireless light blinks while the printer waits for a connection, for about two hours.
- Open HP Smart and add the printer
The app is at 123.hp.com or in your phone's app store. Choose Add printer and follow it.
- Use the Wireless Setup Wizard on a touchscreen
On the printer's screen, find the wizard in the wireless menu, pick your network and type the password.
- Try WPS if the wizard is missing
HP's page names a WPS push button option. Press the printer's button, then the router's.
- Skip guest networks
HP says hotel and campus guest networks often block printers, and Wi-Fi Direct is the answer there.
- Print a test page
Print a page from your computer and from your phone.
What if I changed my router or password?
HP has a page titled Wi-Fi connection is lost after router or network settings change. It says to restore the printer's network settings, then run the Wireless Setup Wizard again. Our page for that case is printer shows offline after a new router.
Why can the printer not see my Wi-Fi?
Many printers only see 2.4 GHz networks. Make sure the router offers one and does not hide it. Splitting 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz shows how.
Should I give the printer a fixed address?
It helps when a computer finds the printer by number. Giving a device a fixed address shows how.
What if the HP Smart app cannot find the printer?
Make sure the phone is on the same Wi-Fi name the printer will join, and that Bluetooth and location permissions are on if the app asks. The printer's wireless light should be blinking, which HP's page says it does for about two hours after you start setup. If the two hours ran out, put the printer back in setup mode and start again.
If the app still cannot see it, use the Wireless Setup Wizard on the printer's screen instead, or the WPS option if there is a push button. After it connects, print a network configuration page to see the address it received, and reserve that address on the router so it stays the same.
Do I need to go outside or touch the antenna for this?
Stay on the ground for all of this. The outdoor radio and its cable are not yours to handle, and a call to 775-575-9593 brings a technician if the problem is up there.
