Set up an ASUS router or ZenWiFi mesh on your High Desert connection

Plug the High Desert injector cable into the ASUS router's WAN port, join its Wi-Fi from your phone, open the ASUS Router app and tap Setup, and choose Automatic IP when it asks for a connection type (ASUS lists Automatic IP and PPPoE). Call 775-575-9593 if it will not connect.

ASUS has an app route and a browser route, both called Quick Internet Setup, or QIS. ASUS's app page lists which models the app supports, and notes that its cable modem models are not supported. Your High Desert line is not a cable modem, so that limit does not matter to you.

Steps

  1. Connect the injector cable to the WAN port

ASUS recommends connecting the modem to the router's WAN port. For you the cable comes from the High Desert power injector, not a modem. From the indoor power injector, a short Ethernet cable carries the High Desert connection to the internet (WAN) port of your router.

  2. Join the router's default Wi-Fi

The name starts with ASUS and is on the label on the back.

  3. Open the ASUS Router app and tap Setup

ASUS's page says to tap Setup, then ASUS Router, and allow the permissions the app asks for. On an iPhone, ASUS recommends choosing to allow location while using the app, and allowing Bluetooth.

  4. Choose the connection type

ASUS lists Automatic IP, which needs nothing else, and PPPoE, which needs a user name and password from the provider. Choose Automatic IP.

  5. Set the Wi-Fi name and password

ASUS offers separate settings for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz by ticking a box for each.

  6. Create the router's login

This is the sign-in for the router's own settings. ASUS says some models print starting credentials on a sticker. Write the new one down somewhere safe.

  7. Decide about remote access

ASUS asks whether to allow access from outside your home network. If you are unsure, decline. You can change it later.

Can I use the browser instead?

Yes. ASUS has a separate page for QIS in the web interface at asusrouter.com or the router's LAN address. It says to follow the information your provider gave you for the internet settings. For High Desert that is automatic, with a call to 775-575-9593 if it fails.

What about ZenWiFi mesh?

ASUS's supported list includes the ZenWiFi line. The app walks you through adding the second node after the first is online. Place it where the first node still has a strong signal.

Is the app required later?

No, but it makes later changes easier. See updating your router's firmware for the first thing to do afterward.

Do I need to go outside or touch the antenna for this?

Please keep off the roof. The antenna, radio and outdoor cable are handled only by a High Desert technician, and a phone call starts that.
